Ballotpedia's Daily Brew

This week's question was, What percentage of state legislative seats will feature a Democrat and a Republican on the general election ballot this year?

You answered: 89%. The correct answer was 93%.

Ballotpedia's analysis of major party competition found that the percentage of state legislative seats contested between both major parties in 2021 (93.2%) was a decade-high. Between 2011 and 2021, only the 2021 election cycle saw a rate of major party competition higher than 90%. Subsequently, the percentage of seats with no major party competition (6.8%) was a decade-low.

By the numbers, 15 of the 220 seats up for election have no major party competition: ten Democrats are running for seats without Republican competition and five Republicans are running without Democratic competition. The remaining 205 are contested by both major parties.

The chart below shows historical information regarding major party competition in state legislative elections in the four states that hold elections in odd-numbered years—Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, and Virginia—from 2011 to 2021.
