Trivia answer

Four states are tied for the most Democratic wins in presidential elections since 1900. Which of the following is not one of them?
a. Arkansas
b. California
c. Maryland
d. Massachusetts

Four states share the most Democratic wins in presidential elections between 1900 and 2016: Arkansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Each went to the Democratic nominee in 20 out of 30 elections. During that period of time, the Democratic nominee carried California in 14 out of 30 elections.

Of the four, the state with the longest Democratic winning streak is Arkansas, which went to the Democratic nominee in every election between 1876 and 1964. Massachusetts and Rhode Island have the longest currently-running Democratic streak of the four, having last backed a Republican (Ronald Reagan) in 1984. Minnesota, with 19 Democratic wins between 1900 and 2016, has the longest currently-running Democratic winning streak of any state, last backing Republican Richard Nixon (R) in 1972.

The state with the highest percentage of Democratic wins between 1900 and 2016 is Hawaii, which did not participate in presidential elections until 1960. Since then, only two Republicans—Richard Nixon (R) in 1972 and Ronald Reagan (R) in 1984—have carried Hawaii. Although not a state, the District of Columbia has participated in every presidential election since 1964 and has backed a Democrat in each.

South Dakota has the most Republican wins in presidential elections between 1900 and 2016. Republicans carried 26 of the 30 elections in that state, with Democrats winning three and Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive) winning one. Alaska, which first participated in the 1960 election, backed the greatest proportion of Republicans, backing a single Democrat, Lyndon Johnson (D), in 1964.
