There were nine debates held during the Democratic presidential primary in 2016. The first debate of the cycle was held on October 13, 2015, in Las Vegas, while the last debate was held on April 14, 2016, in Brooklyn.

Both Hillary Clinton (D) and Bernie Sanders (I) participated in all nine debates. Martin O'Malley (D) participated in the first four debates, while Lincoln Chafee (D) and Jim Webb (D) participated in the first debate only. At this point in the 2016 election, eight of the nine debates had already taken place.

So far in the 2020 election, there have been 11 debates. The first debate was held in two stages on June 26-27, 2019, between 20 candidates in Miami. The most recent debate was last night's debate in Washington, D.C., between Joe Biden (D) and Bernie Sanders (I). One more debate is scheduled to take place in April.

During the 2016 Republican primary, 12 debates were held. The first debate took place on August 6, 2015, in Cleveland, while the last debate took place on March 10, 2016, in Miami. The only three candidates to participate in all 12 debates were Ted Cruz (R), John Kasich (R), and Marco Rubio (R). Donald Trump (R) qualified for all 12 debates but did not take part in the sixth debate in Des Moines.
