Trivia answer
Since 1900, which state other than Ohio has the best record of backing winning presidential candidates?
a. Illinois
b. Pennsylvania
c. New Mexico
d. Florida
In the 30 presidential elections which have taken place since 1900, no state has a higher rate of backing winning presidential candidates than Ohio. During that time, the only two candidates to carry Ohio and lose the overall election were Thomas Dewey (R) in 1944 and Richard Nixon (R) in 1960. The state with the second-best record is New Mexico, which backed the winning candidate in 24 out of the 27 elections which took place since it was granted statehood in 1912.
Two of the three elections where New Mexico backed the losing candidate took place in the 2000s. Al Gore (D) carried New Mexico in 2000 by a margin of 366 votes, while Hillary Clinton (D) carried the state in 2016. The only other candidate to carry New Mexico while losing the presidency was Gerald Ford (R) in 1976.
Washington, D.C. has the lowest overall accuracy rating. Since the District's first presidential election in 1964, it has been carried by the Democratic nominee 100% of the time, giving it an overall accuracy rate of 42.3%. Washington, D.C. is followed by Mississippi, the only state which has backed the winning presidential candidate in less than half of elections. Mississippi backed the losing candidate nationally in 16 out of 30 presidential elections since 1900, including every election between 1948 and 1968.
