Hundreds of elections took place in 2019 across the United States, including primary and general elections at the state and local levels and special elections at the federal, state, and local levels. Candidates were also preparing for the 2020 elections, including elections for President of the United States, all 435 seats in the U.S. House, 33 of the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate, and 11 of 50 state governorships.
The 2019 elections had the potential to impact trifecta control in five states, control of 25 state executive offices, and control of municipal offices in 59 of America's 100 largest cities by population. Ballotpedia identified and followed a series of narratives—big picture stories—up-and-down the ballot and across the country throughout the year. This page presents Ballotpedia's research and curation on 2019 elections in the United States, including:
- Coverage of federal special elections and the 2020 presidential race
- Coverage of state elections, including gubernatorial and state legislative races
- Coverage of local elections, including mayoral and other municipal elections
Ballotpedia compiled a list of the top 10 races we watched in November 2019, including races for state executive and legislative offices, municipal elections, and statewide ballot measures. To find out what happened in those races, click here.
