Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection Expansion Project

Ballotpedia is looking to better connect voters to candidates ahead of the 2021 local elections in the six cities listed below. What is happening in your community that you want to hear from your candidates about? Are there pressing issues you want your elected officials to address?

Voters had until June 4th to submit those questions for possible inclusion in our survey. The questions submitted are currently under review. Individuals whose questions are included in our surveys are eligible to receive $50. More in the fine print below.

List of cities:

  • Birmingham, Alabama
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Minneapolis, Minnesota
  • Jersey City, New Jersey
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Seattle, Washington

Recommendations for the question

  • Be open-ended
  • Be unbiased
  • Be fewer than 75 words
  • Require little to no explanatory text and contain limited/no jargon
  • Focus on local issues
  • Ask for specifics from the candidate
  • Center around a single subject

Fine print

  • Questions were due by June 4th at 5:00 pm E.T.
  • All questions submitted will first be reviewed by Ballotpedia Staff. If different versions of the same question are submitted, only the first submission will be considered. Once Ballotpedia Staff narrow down the questions (removing duplicates, questions outside the scope of this project, questions containing profanity or harmful language) the questions will be reviewed by the Candidate Connection Expansion Project Advisory Board. (To learn more about the advisory board click here.)
  • Questions may be edited for clarity and to remove bias. You can learn more about how Ballotpedia screens for bias click here.
  • Ballotpedia reserves the right to edit questions.
  • Selected questions will be added to Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection Survey.
  • Voters who submitted a chosen question will be contacted by July 2nd at the latest to claim their award.
  • Awards will be given via PayPal and thus requires readers providing a valid email address and having a PayPal account set up. If you don't have access to a PayPal account please let us know and we will work with you.
  • Please write to editor@ballotpedia.org with any questions you have.
