How does Ballotpedia...
...define candidacy?
...define incumbency?
...order candidate lists?
...choose battlegrounds?
...cover primaries?
...cover endorsements?
...cover campaign finance?
...cover polls?
...cover recall efforts?
...call an election?
...cover recounts?
...handle postponements?

Ballotpedia invites all candidates to complete our Candidate Connection survey when they run for elected office. As part of that survey, we ask candidates to share information about their race and ethnicity.

This is an optional question, and if candidates choose to answer it, their response is not published on their Ballotpedia profile. Instead, this data is aggregated for use in comparative analysis.

The question is structured using the same approach as the 2020 Census. Click here to see how the United States Census Bureau asked for this data. Please note that if future editions of the Census feature revised versions of this question, Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey will be updated accordingly in order to continue matching it.
