Text and images in the public domain means text or images that anyone can use in any way and for any purpose.

• If you use public domain materials on Ballotpedia (words or images) you should still need to say where the words or images came from. Otherwise, you risk plagiarism.

• The U.S. Copyright Office defines the public domain as the sum of works that are not copyrighted, meaning:
  • works that were not eligible for copyright in the first place, or
  • works whose copyright has expired.

In the U.S., any work published before January 1, 1923 anywhere in the world is in the public domain. Other countries are not bound to that 1923 date.
