Intermediate Appellate Courts Seal.png
This page is part of the intermediate appellate courts project, a Ballotpedia project dedicated to articles related to intermediate appellate courts and judges.

The goals of this project have been met and it is considered complete. Katyfarrell 08:24, 17 December 2010 (CST)

About the project

This project is devoted to building articles about state intermediate appellate courts and judges. There are 40 such state courts and there is a section of Ballotpedia devoted to these courts. The purpose of this project is to get wiki pages written about each state's intermediate appellate court, and each of those court's judges. This project aims to make achieving that large goal easy by breaking it into smaller steps.

There are 947 intermediate appellate court judges, nearly all of whom have a sprout page written on Ballotpedia. When this project is complete, all 947 will have a full page.

Writing guidelines

Extensive writing guidelines can be found at this page: Ballotpedia:Writing guidelines for judge pages. The five sections listed on this page (introduction, biography, career, external links and references) are the minimum that should be on each intermediate appellate court judge's page. More sections are welcome and there are further guidelines to other types of section here.

When the page for each intermediate appellate judge contains each of these sections it can be crossed off of this list using this code: <strike></strike>

Alabama Court of Civil Appeals | Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals | Alaska Court of Appeals | Arizona Court of Appeals | Arkansas Court of Appeals | California Courts of Appeal | Colorado Court of Appeals | Connecticut Appellate Court | Florida District Courts of Appeal | Georgia Court of Appeals | Hawaii Intermediate Court of Appeals | Idaho Court of Appeals | Illinois Appellate Court | Indiana Court of Appeals | Iowa Court of Appeals | Kansas Court of Appeals | Kentucky Court of Appeals | Louisiana Circuit Courts of Appeal | Maryland Court of Special Appeals | Massachusetts Appeals Court | Michigan Court of Appeals | Minnesota Court of Appeals | Mississippi Court of Appeals | Missouri Court of Appeals | Nebraska Court of Appeals | New Jersey Superior Court, Appellate Division | New Mexico Court of Appeals | New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division | North Carolina Court of Appeals | North Dakota Court of Appeals | Ohio District Courts of Appeal | Oklahoma Court of Civil Appeals | Oregon Court of Appeals | Pennsylvania Superior Court | Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court | South Carolina Court of Appeals | Tennessee Court of Appeals | Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals | Texas Court of Appeals | Utah Court of Appeals | Virginia Court of Appeals | Washington Court of Appeals | Wisconsin Courts of Appeal

Research

Finding the information outlined below for an individual judge can be challenging. Often an internet search of their name will not provide you with the information you want. If that is the case, these suggestions may be helpful:

  • Search for the judge directly from the intermediate court's website. Example.
  • Look for the judge on Vote Smart (generally most helpful when searching for federal judges).
  • Check Wikipedia.
  • Try searching for the judge's name in "quotations" on your search engine.

Introduction

The introduction to an intermediate appellate judge's page should follow these guidelines:

  • Their name in bold. This is done by placing three apostrophes on each side of the name. If a middle initial, Jr, Sr, or other part of their name is known, it should be included.
  • A mention of what court the judge serves on, and a link back to that page.
  • A mention of how the judge came to serve on that court (by election? appointment?), and when the current term expires.
  • If the judge is involved in any ongoing controversy, current election, or other item of note it can be mentioned in the introduction.

An example:

Lee H. Hildebrandt, Jr. is a judge on the Ohio First District Court of Appeals. Judge Hildebrandt was elected to the Court in 1984 at the age of 37. He was re-elected in 1990, 1996 and again in 2002.

=Biography

Email editor@ballotpedia.org to notify us of updates to this biography.

=

A biography section may be placed on the page. It should include sourced information about the judge's undergrad and legal education, marital status, etc.

An example:

Judge Hildebrandt received his B.A. degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1969, and his J.D. degree from the University of Toledo in 1972.[1]

Career

This section is a review of the judge's career history. It should include law firms where they worked, judges served under, any notable appointments, etc.

An example:

Upon admission to the bar in 1972, Judge Hildebrandt was in private practice until he became an Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor in 1978. He then served as a Referee in the Domestic Relations Court until taking his seat on the Appellate Bench.[1]

External links

The external links section of the article is where you place links to notable outside sources that provide significant information about the judge and are not already listed under the "references" section. These would generally include:

  • A judges' personal website.
  • Is there a campaign website for the judge? This should be linked in the external links section.
  • Is there an article about the judge on Vote Smart? This should be linked in the external links section.

Footnotes

The "reference" section of your article is where the footnotes appear that you have placed in the body of the text. See the quick guide to editing for information on how to create a reference section.

Categories

NOTE: This portion of the project is complete.

Because each state's intermediate appellate court has a different title, the category each judge is placed in should be simplified to:

[[category:State intermediate appellate court judges]] ("State" should be replaced by the actual name of the state.)

Per Judgepedia category conventions, only proper nouns in a category should be capitalized.

When the wiki page for each intermediate appellate judge is in the correct category it can be crossed off of this list using this code: <strike></strike>

Templates

Core project templates

Standardizing templates

NOTE: This portion of the project is complete.

An organizational aspect of this project is creating and standardizing templates for the judges of the state appellate courts. Each intermediate appellate court should have a template listing the judges within it. Many of these templates have already been made, but do not meet the standards listed below, and therefore need some clean up.

The standards these templates should meet are as follows:

  • Judges should be listed in alphabetical order.
  • The Chief or Presiding Judge should be noted and listed first when known.
  • Middle initials are not required.
  • In states with multiple divisions, each division should be listed individually. (See the "Judges of the Ohio District Courts of Appeal" template below for an example.)

Existing templates for the state intermediate appellate courts can be found on the list of horizontal navigational templates page. New templates can be made by copying-and-pasting from an existing one, and updating the names of the judges.

These templates may be simple or more complex depending on how many divisions the state has at the appellate level. If you are creating a new one for a state with only one or two divisions, use the Alaska style. If you are creating a template for a court with many divisions, the Ohio model may be clearer.

Alaska's style is quite simple (click "show" if necessary):

while the one for Ohio is more complex:

As these templates are created or cleaned up, strike them out on the list below using this code: <strike></strike>

Placing templates

NOTE: This portion of the project is complete.

After the template is created for the intermediate appellate judges in a state, that template should be placed on the page of each judge listed in the template. This is done by placing the name of the template inside of two sets of curly brackets. For example:

{{Judges of the Alaska Court of Appeals}}

will appear on the page like this:

These templates should be placed near the bottom of the page, below the "References" section and above the categories.

As these templates are placed on each of the appropriate judge's pages, please strike them from this list using this code: <strike></strike>
