Ballotpedia & Twitter Team Up to Identify 2018 Candidates

Twitter partners with Ballotpedia to launch new U.S. election labels

Middleton, Wis. - May 23, 2018: Today, Twitter announced a new feature rolling out to candidate profiles next week: U.S. election labels. Ballotpedia’s election team will be providing Twitter with the data to identify general election candidates who will appear on the ballot in gubernatorial and Congressional races this November.

These new Twitter labels include the office the candidate is seeking, the state where the office is located, and a small icon of a government building. They will appear on tweets and profile pages of political candidates in select races.

Ballotpedia covers all candidates in every upcoming election occurring within the 100 most-populated cities in the U.S., plus all federal and statewide elections, including ballot measures. After each state primary, Ballotpedia will provide Twitter with information on gubernatorial and Congressional candidates who will appear on the November ballot. After receiving consent from each candidate, Twitter will apply the labels to each candidate profile.

“Our team is excited to have the opportunity to help Twitter users accurately identify the candidates in their upcoming elections,” said Geoff Pallay, Ballotpedia’s Editor-in-Chief. “We’re thrilled to be able to partner with Twitter and expand the reach of Ballotpedia’s enormous dataset. We believe high-quality data and information is essential to a thriving and healthy political process. To feel confident, readers need to trust the content they consume.”

Twitter users can look for these labels starting May 30.
