Ballotpedia Releases List of Vulnerable Trifectas

Five of the Democratic Party’s eight state trifectas and seven of the Republican Party’s 26 state trifectas have the potential to break

Middleton, Wis. - April 26, 2018: A new study by Ballotpedia analyzes each of the five Democratic and 26 Republican state government trifectas to identify which of these single party governments might change as a result of the 2018 elections.

Ballotpedia rated two Democratic trifectas highly vulnerable in 2018: Connecticut and Delaware. Two additional trifectas were rated “moderately vulnerable”, and one “somewhat vulnerable”. Four Republican trifectas were rated highly vulnerable: Florida, Michigan, Ohio, and New Hampshire. Three additional trifectas were rated moderately vulnerable.

A state government trifecta is a term to describe single party government, when one political party holds the governorship, a majority in the state senate, and a majority in the state house in a state's government.

Trifecta control of a state affords a political party the opportunity to advance its agenda without requiring as much support from a minority party. Gaining or breaking trifectas thus often becomes a major priority for a party heading into each election cycle. In the past eight years, a state government trifecta has been broken or gained 52 times.
