Ballotpedia partners with Twitter to identify 2020 election candidates

Providing two ways for Twitter users to verify candidates’ accounts

Middleton, Wis. - December 12, 2019: Ballotpedia’s election team will be providing Twitter with the data to identify candidates who will appear on 2020 ballots in gubernatorial and Congressional races this November.

Ballotpedia is excited to help power this feature that will allow Twitter users to feel confident that they are viewing content from verified candidates in 2020 races.

Twitter will use Ballotpedia data to verify the candidates’ Twitter profiles by adding a blue-check mark next to their campaign Twitter handle and apply election labels to the general election candidates. These identifiers will appear on tweets and profile pages of political candidates in select races.

Ballotpedia covers all candidates in every upcoming election occurring within the 100 most-populated cities in the U.S., plus all federal and statewide elections, including ballot measures.

After each state filing deadline, Twitter will verify the campaign Twitter accounts of gubernatorial and Congressional candidates running in the primaries, as identified by the Ballotpedia team.

After each state primary, Ballotpedia will provide Twitter with information on gubernatorial and Congressional candidates who will appear on the November ballot so that Twitter can apply the labels to each candidate profile. You will begin to see these after the first primary on March 3rd.

Candidates in these races are encouraged to reach out to Ballotpedia with their campaign Twitter handles. Those can be submitted via email at editor@ballotpedia.org, or through our questionnaire, located at https://ballotpedia.org/Survey.
