Barbara Hart Key is a judge of the Winnebago County Circuit Court in Wisconsin. She was first elected to this position on April 7, 1998, to replace retired Judge Thomas S. Williams.[1][2]

Key won re-election in the general election on April 5, 2016.[3]

Wisconsin held general elections for local judicial offices on April 5, 2016. A primary election took place on February 16, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was January 5, 2016. Incumbent Barbara Key ran unopposed in the Winnebago County Circuit Court general election for Branch 3.[3]

The 241 judges of the Wisconsin Circuit Courts are elected in nonpartisan elections to six-year terms. All judges must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving after their term expires.[4]

The chief judge of each circuit court is chosen by the state supreme court to serve a two-year term.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on the circuit courts, a judge must be:[4]

  • a qualified elector in the state;
  • a qualified elector of his or her circuit (for circuit judges); and
  • licensed to practice law in the state for at least five years.

Key was re-elected to the circuit court without opposition on April 6, 2010.[5]

Education

Key received both her undergraduate degree and J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She was admitted to the bar in 1983.[6]

Career

Key is a former prosecutor for the counties of Wood and Winnebago. She then worked briefly as a supervising attorney for the State Public Defender’s office before becoming a commissioner for the Winnebago County Circuit Court in 1991. In 1998, she was elected judge of that court.[7]

2004

Key was re-elected to the circuit court without opposition on April 6, 2004.[8]

1998

Key was elected to the circuit court on April 7, 1998, defeating John H. Wallace, III with 72.6 percent of the vote.[2]
