Barbara Smith was the District 5 incumbent on the Tyler school board in Texas. She won election to the seat by defeating then-incumbent Ross Strader in the special election for a one-year term on May 10, 2014. She ran for re-election to a full-term in the District 5 seat on May 9, 2015. She lost the election.[1]

Smith is a former educator and mother of seven children, six of whom attended Tyler ISD schools. She is also an ordained minister and serves as a leader at Tyler Metro Church. She has previously owned and operated a local newspaper, Megaplex Heritage News, and is an author, having written nine books.[2]

She has been involved in the education system in Tyler for over 20 years, including teaching full-time at T.K. Gorman, serving on the Tyler Catholic School Board and substituting in various schools throughout the Tyler Independent School District.

Barbara has served on the Board for the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, Habitat for Humanity and Head Start (in New York). She is also the Minister of Prayer at Tyler Metro Church where she has been a member for 30 years.
