I spent my childhood growing up in St. Louis and then attended William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, where I met my wife of 30 years. After moving around the Midwest, my family landed in Cedar Rapids 17 years ago. While living in Cedar Rapids, I returned to school, where I received my Master of Accounting degree from the University of Iowa.

For several years, I volunteered my time with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program in Cedar Rapids sponsored by the United Way. I assisted members of our community with low and moderate incomes prepare their taxes at no charge and helped other volunteers learn how to prepare tax returns for our community.

I have spent over 25 years retail management, learning how to listen and assist customers. The most rewarding part of the job was watching high school students take on their first job and grow into the young men and women that they are today. For the last few years, I have worked with small business owners in the logistics industry, helping them start and grow their businesses into successful companies that serve eastern Iowa.
  • With prices at the gas station and grocery store skyrocketing, the last thing Cedar Rapids families should have to worry about is a an increase in taxes. I am committed to decreasing the tax burden on Iowa families and finding solutions to the increasing property taxes that we face to help keep money with hard working Iowans.
  • Every Iowa student deserves a world class education, whether after high school they will be joining the workforce, going to trade school, community college or a four-year university. It's our job to ensure each student receives the education they need to thrive. I will fight for our children and ensure Iowa schools are preparing our children for a bright future.
  • We should feel safe to walk our streets at night. WE should not have to worry about our kids on their walk home from school. I will work to keep our communities safe by supporting our law enforcement and help them adapt to a changing environment. Burdensome government barriers and regulations that fail to protect our communities need to be removed.
The tax burden on Cedar Rapidians needs to be reduced so that they can afford to feed their families, start a small business, and not have to work a second job. We also need to get Iowa back to providing a world-class education to our children that Iowa was once known for. Our children need the opportunity to thrive when the grow up to be young men and women. Lastly, our law enforcement needs our support to provide us with a safe community.
I look up to my father who was a teacher and cared about the people around him. He was the "difficult" teacher because he wanted his students to be the best that they could be. The only that would happen was if they were challenged. He also took care of those in need in his community by quietly giving of his time to give them a better life.
Elected officials should care about the community that they represent and be willing to put personal desires to aside to benefit their community. The should also be willing to stand strong in their moral beliefs so that they aren't easily swayed to change their stance on issues that impact their community.
I mowed yards for 6 years in my neighborhood while is was in middle school and high school. I was able to provide work to some of friends during the busier time of year.
Iowa will be challenged to balance the needs of the larger cities with the small towns and rural communities. By successfully balancing the needs of Iowans we can help everyone grow and prosper together.
There are many life experiences that are beneficial for state legislators, not just having been in government or politics previously. My experience working in our community and in management will help me navigate the state legislature.
Building a relationship with other legislators is an important pieces of understanding the issues that face our state and we can best attack them. We need to pull on all of our life experiences to develop the best solutions to the difficult problems that we face.
We should be able to easily understand how government agencies are spending our tax dollars so that we can hold our government officials accountable to their results. By simply seeing how agencies are spending our money, we will see improved responsibility in how are taxes are spent and the results that we receive in our community.
