Barrett has worked for 25 years protecting children and families - first, as a police officer, then, as an Assistant District Attorney prosecuting crimes against women and children, and for the past 15 years, serving as a family lawyer.
More importantly, Barrett is a conservative, faith-driven father and husband who wants to ensure the same freedoms and benefits he grew up with are passed to the next generation.- The 170th District Court is a FAMILY AND CIVIL LAW COURT. It has not handled a criminal case in over 20 years. Barrett Thomas is the only candidate in the race with family law experience, which accounts for just shy of 50% of the current docket. No judge should preside in a courtroom where they lack any experience in a practice area that accounts for half of the docket.
- Family law matters because it impacts our entire community—from its safety and health, to its economy, and more. The greatest problem facing America today is the breakdown of the family. As a graduate student in Marriage and Family Counseling, Barrett is very familiar with the consequences of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—such as abuse, neglect, addiction, and household dysfunction. Family courts deal with those traumas every day. A judge must understand the psychological impact of trauma and its long-lasting implications for families to successfully help those who come before him/her, and that only comes with experience.
- Should the other seven courts that currently handle criminal law ever need assistance, Barrett is the candidate most prepared to help. He is a former police officer and prosecutor of crimes against women and children. In addition to his law degree, Barrett holds a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master Peace Officer and Instructor’s Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.
