Five seats on the Barrow County Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, to select Republican candidates in Districts 1, 4, 7 and 9. A runoff primary election was held on July 22, 2014.
Debi Krause defeated District 1 incumbent Randall Holland in the Republican runoff election on July 22, 2014, and defeated Democratic candidate Betty Kinney in the general election. Michael Shelley defeated District 4 incumbent Will Dunn in the Republican primary runoff and won the general election without opposition. Suzanne Angle won the District 7 primary against Charles Chase III and Diane Loomis. Angle was elected without opposition in the general election as she did not face a Democratic candidate. Incumbent Mark Still defeated DuWayne Anderson in the District 9 primary and won another term in the general election without opposition. District 3 incumbent Connie Wehunt was the only incumbent to win election unopposed in both the primary and general elections.

Barrow County School System is located in Barrow County, Georgia. The county seat of Barrow County is Winder, Georgia. Barrow County is home to 71,453 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Barrow County School System was the 28th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 12,885 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]
Demographics
Barrow County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 16.6 percent of Barrow County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Barrow County was $51,202 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Barrow County was 13.6 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Barrow County Board of Education consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. Members in Districts 7, 8 and 9 represent the entire county while the other six members are elected by specific geographic districts. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014, a runoff primary election on July 22, 2014, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014.[3]
Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[4]

The school board elections shared the ballot with county, state and national primary and general elections. Residents of Barrow County voted in one competitive race for county commission. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. There were also state executive elections including races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The May 20, 2014, election also selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.[6]
