Two separate campaigns targeting two different members of the Hawaiian Gardens City Council in California were launched in August 2010. Both recall efforts were ultimately abandoned.
Background
City council member Mike Gomez, who was part of a 3-2 majority on the council that included Mayor Victor Farfan and Mayor Pro Tem Michiko Oyama-Canada, was targeted for recall. The Gomez recall was related to his vote to approve building an $8 million sports complex at Fedde Middle School. Hawaiian Gardens had an annual budget of $2.5 million at the time of the vote.[1]
City council member Barry Bruce, one of the newest members of the city council at the time of the recall effort, was part of a 2-3 minority on the city council that criticized what they viewed as wasteful city spending. He was targeted for recall by city residents who believed that Bruce was behind the Gomez recall. One Bruce opponent said, "A line in the sand has been drawn, and you, sir, are on the wrong side."[2]
