Recall reports

An effort in Cupertino, California, to recall Mayor Barry Chang from his position was launched in April 2016. Recall organizers filed a recall application with the Cupertino City Clerk on April 19, 2016.[1] The recall did not qualify for the general election ballot on November 8, 2016, but organizers were gathering signatures for a special election in 2017.[2]

Recall supporters

Ignatius Ding filed the recall application against Chang on behalf of local residents concerned about the mayor's relationships with real estate developers. The application cited campaign donations to Chang by developers associated with local projects including redevelopments of Vallco Shopping Mall and The Oaks Shopping Center. Ding and other proponents were also supportive of an initiative put forward by the Cupertino Citizens' Sensible Growth Initiative.[1][3]

Response by Barry Chang

Chang stated during a press conference that he was surprised by the recall effort. He suggested that the recall effort was organized by a few residents and did not represent the majority of Cupertino voters.[4]

Recall organizers had until August 17, 2016, to gather and submit 5,294 valid signatures to the city clerk for a recall election on November 8, 2016.[1] The August 17 deadline passed without the delivery of signatures and organizers shifted their focus to a 2017 special election. The filing deadline for a 2017 special election was October 18, 2016.[2]
