Barry Garber
Barry L. Garber was a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. He was first appointed to the court on September 18, 1991.[1] Garber served on the court until he died at age 89 on January 12, 2020.[2]

In what was considered to be an important case involving free speech on social networking sites, Judge Garber allowed a lawsuit filed by a former Florida high school student, Katherine Evans, to proceed on February 12, 2010. The judge ruled that a Facebook group page which the student used to air complaints on a former teacher is considered free speech because the comments, according to the judge's ruling, were made off-campus and had no implications to threaten the teacher.[3] The case was settled with Evans receiving $15,000 to cover legal fees.[4]
