Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Michaels' campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Jobs: My plan to create jobs is simple. The government issues a new type of savings bond (possibly: USA BizBonds) used exclusively to finance small businesses and create jobs. The bonds would be available in different denominations at any FDIC bank or other financial institution. Each bond would yield a reasonable rate of return which would be preset for a period of 5 – 10 years.
  • Prison Reform: There are about 20 million felons in the United States, of which more than 13 million have the right to vote. Instead of demonizing them, let’s give them the opportunity to become productive members of society and thereby reduce the rate of recidivism. That rate is currently over 67% according to the National Institute of Justice. The cost to the States is over 52 billion dollars a year, the second fastest growing budget item after Medicaid
  • Student Debt: My student loan forgiveness plan makes good economical sense for both the student and the government. It assures an economically better and more educated society, which in turn makes us a stronger nation.
  • Immigration: It’s estimated that there are over eleven million (so called) illegal residents in this country so rounding them up and sending them back to their home country is unrealistic.
  • ISIS: I believe ISIS itself does not represent a threat to our homeland, but individual acts of terrorism are. Preventing these type of acts are a function of education, intelligence and law enforcement working together with an emphasis on technology with a balance of individual civil rights. Let’s use our money where it does the most amount of good, let’s use it here at home.
