Bart Rask
Bart Rask was a candidate for Position 5 representative on the Hillsboro School Board in Oregon. He lost in the general election on May 19, 2015.
Over five years after the first proposal was made, it appeared a land swap between Hillsboro School District and neighboring Beaverton School District might finally move forward in 2015. While there was vocal debate in Hillsboro, which was the point of instigation for the proposed district changes, Beaverton had not responded to calls to meet and discuss the change as of late April 2015.
Biography
Rask was born in Portland and graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School. He earned his M.D. from the Oregon Health & Sciences University in 1989. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Boston University, and his sports-medicine fellowships at Harvard and Indiana Universities. He is a board certified orthopedic surgeon and has practiced at Hillsboro Orthopedic Group since 1998.[1]

Rask provided the following statements on his campaign website:
“ | Experienced Leadership
Bart Rask has worked with the Citizen’s Curriculum Advisory Committee, mentored students for the job shadow program, and has been a regular public school lecturer and classroom volunteer for over 15 years. Since 1998, he has been Hillsboro High School’s team physician, and along with Tuality Hospital, designed and introduced the state’s first low-cost, pre-season physical exam program for student athletes. Supporting Teachers and Students Bart Rask will work to find solutions to reduce classroom sizes and lessen out-of-classroom responsibilities so teachers can spend more individual time with students. Teachers need sufficient time to prepare course plans and critique homework, and freedom to be creative and innovative in the classroom. Preparing for the Future Education doesn’t end with the school year. We need to do a better job preparing our students for their paths after high school, whether it is attending college, joining the workforce, or pursuing a vocational career. By developing relationships with businesses and industries in Hillsboro, we can help students make the right choices for their future. We should be supporting things like the wood shop at Hillsboro High School that sits idle and need re-investment, or Forest Grove has the Viking House Program, which is a self-funding program in which students build a home, learning valuable construction skills they may pursue. We need to develop more vocational programs for students not aiming for college. Budgeting Better and Spending Wisely. By prioritizing our spending, we can find the revenue sources needed to support our schools. We can replace textbooks, reinstate after-school programs, develop a diverse curriculum, and protect teachers’ pay— all without cutting school days. We also need to have a stricter review of where money is being spent. If a program or spending proposal is made, I want to study where it is coming from and where it is intended to go, what it requires from taxpayers and the board, and validate that it is needed before we approve it. My goal is to make sure the student and classroom are first priority. We must realize that a dollar to one program is potentially one less dollar to another. We should be lobbying the legislature for more funds, but if the funding still is short we need to work together to prioritize the budget toward achieving lower class sizes which allows teachers to give more attention to their students.[4] |
