Barton C. Gaut was a judge on the Fourth District, Division Two of the California Courts of Appeal. He was appointed by Governor Wilson and, after his confirmation, took the oath of office on May 29, 1997. He would have been up for retention in November 2010, but he retired from his justiceship earlier in the year, on February 28, 2010.[1] Carol D. Codrington was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Justice Gaut's retirement.
Education
Barton Gaut earned his bachelor's degree from UCLA in 1957. From 1957 to 1959, he served in the army. He earned his law degree from Berkeley (Boalt Hall School of Law) in 1962. He is married with four children and six grandchildren.[2]
Career
Barton Gaut began his legal career in 1962 as an attorney for the law firm Best, Best & Krieger. In 1995, he was appointed to the Riverside Superior Court, where he worked until his appointment to the Court of Appeals.[2]
