Basel, Switzerland, Language Test for Naturalization Referendum (2011)
A referendum to require a language test for naturalization was voted on in the city of Basel in Switzerland on November 27, 2011.
The measure was defeated with 24,978 votes against and 17,653 votes in favor. The initiative was supported by the Swiss People’s Party (SVP). The measure would have required those seeking naturalization to take a written test to show their command of the German language.[1]
