Basil Seggos was the New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation. Seggos assumed office in 2015. Seggos left office on April 15, 2024.

After completing his education, Seggos began working as a chief investigator and an attorney for Riverkeeper, Inc. After that, he served as vice president of business development for Hugo Neu, a clean-tech private equity company. He began working for New York State in 2012 as the assistant secretary for the environment under Gov. Andrew Cuomo. In 2013, he was appointed deputy secretary of the environment. He remained in this position until being appointed commissioner in 2015.[1]

Seggos also became a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General's Corps.[2]

Political career

New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation (2015-2024)

Seggos was appointed New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) in October 2015 and was unanimously confirmed by the New York State Senate on June 15, 2016.[2]

Seggos was appointed to replace former Commissioner Joe Martens, who resigned after serving slightly more than one four-year term.[3][4] Seggos took over for interim officeholder Marc Gerstman.[5]

Seggos resigned as New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation on April 15, 2024, and was replaced by acting Commissioner Sean Mahar. [6]

The New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation is an appointed state executive position in the New York state government.

The commissioner serves as head of the New York Department of Environmental Conservation. As head of the department, the commissioner oversees programs relating to the state's environment, responses to natural and man-made disasters, and outdoor recreation opportunities.[7]
