Battlegrounds were races that Ballotpedia expected to have a meaningful effect on the balance of power in governments or to be particularly competitive or compelling.[1] Factors that we consider in naming a battleground election include whether a seat was open, if a particularly strong challenger entered the race, and the results of recent elections in the area.

In 2019, Ballotpedia covered 56 battleground elections. This figure includes 18 state-level battlegrounds, 30 local government battlegrounds, and 6 battleground special elections for federal office.

This page lists the battleground elections at the state, local, and federal level that occurred in 2019.
