Bear hunting bill reaches Connecticut General Assembly

HARTFORD, Connecticut: A bill that would lay the groundwork for a bear hunting season, has passed the Environment Committee and now moves to the General Assembly. The bill passed the committee 19-9 with one member absent.[1]
If the bill were to be made law it would establish a fee and lottery based system for bear hunting in the state. Hunters would have the opportunity to pay $10 to be entered into a lottery for a chance to kill and keep a bear. Those that win the lottery would then have to pay an additional $200 for a bear hunting license.[1]
Animal rights activists are outraged at the proposal, while supporters of the hunt claim that the bear population has increased and that the bears have become a nuisance in suburbs.[1]
