One of the 11 seats on the Beaufort County School District school board in South Carolina was up for by-district special election on October 17, 2017. John Dowling Jr. defeated Susan Gordon for the seat. The special election for District 6 was triggered after former board member Patricia Felton-Montgomery resigned several months after she was elected to the board in 2016.[1]

The Beaufort County school board is a nonpartisan board that consists of 11 members elected to four-year terms. Members are elected by district.

In order to get on the ballot for a South Carolina school board election, candidates had to be 18 years old, residents of the county and/or district at the time of the election, and registered to vote. The filing deadline for this school board election was August 15, 2017.[2]

To vote in South Carolina, one must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of South Carolina, and at least 18 years old by the time of the next election. Citizens may register to vote in person at a county board of voter registration or by downloading and completing a form and mailing, faxing, or emailing it to a county voter registration office. The deadline to register to vote in this election was September 15, 2017.[3]

Beaufort County School District is located in Beaufort County, South Carolina.

Beaufort County School District is located in Beaufort County in southern South Carolina. The city of the same name is the seat of county government. Beaufort County was home to an estimated 183,149 residents between 2010 and 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] The district was the 10th-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 21,355 students.[6]

Demographics

Beaufort County outperformed in comparison to South Carolina as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 38.8 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 25.8 percent of state residents. The median household income in the county was $57,048, compared to $45,483 for the entire state. County residents lived below the poverty level at a rate of 12.9 percent, while that rate was 15.3 percent for all state residents.[5]
