Four seats on the Bedford County Public Schools School Board were up for general election on November 3, 2015.

The seats of District 1 incumbent Richard Downey, District 5 incumbent Julie Bennington, District 6 incumbent Kelly Harmony and District 7 incumbent Kevin Willis were up for election.[1]

Board member Downey defeated challenger W.P. Johnson Jr. and retained his position in the District 1 seat. Fellow incumbent Bennington ran unopposed and won re-election to her District 5 seat. Newcomers Susan Kirby and Martin Leamy also ran unopposed and won the District 6 and District 7 seats, respectively.

Bedford County Public Schools is located in central Virginia in Bedford County. The county seat of Bedford County is Bedford. This county was home to 76,583 residents in 2014, according to estimates by the United States Census Bureau.[2] In the 2011-2012 school year, Bedford County Public Schools was the 28th-largest school district in Virginia and served 10,562 students.[3]

Demographics

Bedford County underperformed compared to the rest of Virginia in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 25.0 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 35.2 percent for Virginia as a whole. The median household income in Bedford County was $57,596, compared to $63,907 for the state of Virginia. The poverty rate was 8.2 percent, compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[2]
