A special election for the position of Georgia House of Representatives District 89 was called for November 7, 2017. Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, a special runoff election between the top-two candidates was held on December 5, 2017. It featured Democrats Bee Nguyen and Sachin Varghese. Nguyen won the runoff election with 52 percent of the vote.[2]

The candidate filing deadline was September 15.[3] The candidates who successfully qualified and ran in the November 7 election were Democrats Bee Nguyen, David Abbott, Monique Keane, and Sachin Varghese.

The seat became vacant following Stacey Abrams' (D) resignation in August 2017 to focus on her run for governor.

Campaign website

Nguyen's campaign website stated the following:

Protect Our Democracy

As a voting rights expert, Bee will stand up and protect your freedom to vote, and Bee will ensure Georgia’s elections are always fair and secure. Bee will:

✔ Invest in training and resources for all 159 local election boards

✔ Prioritize voter education and outreach, using technology, like text messaging alert systems

✔ Promote language access and translation of all election materials housed within the Elections division

✔ Mitigate election disformation, cybersecurity threats, and foreign interference with our elections

✔ Develop kiosks to securely submit vote-by-mail applications and scan ID to be placed across the state of Georgia with a focus on areas with lack of access to broadband

✔ Protect the election certification process by upholding the will of the people

Create Economic Opportunities

As the founder of a small business, Bee knows firsthand the challenges Georgians face to build and sustain their dreams. Removing barriers for small business owners and practitioners who rely on the Secretary of State’s office to obtain their licenses is a critical part of building a strong workforce. Bee will also create regional partnerships with community organizations and chambers throughout Georgia to strengthen opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Strengthen Consumer Protections

As a nonprofit leader, Bee knows Georgians deserve to invest their resources without becoming the victims of fraud. She will create a public registry of charities and securities known for fraudulent activities and regulate shell corporations that prey on seniors and other vulnerable Georgians to escape accountability.[4]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Georgia

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
