I am proud to call North Las Vegas my home. I am a native born Las Vegan and I care deeply about the Las Vegas Valley and its communities. I spent my childhood in North Las Vegas, and it is a community I will continue to embrace. I am a proud graduate of the Clark County public education school system. After high school, I attended Howard University for my undergraduate studies. Later I was accepted and attended American University, Washington College of Law. I have always had a career in service. I started my legal career in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as an Assistant Defender at the Defender Association of Philadelphia. Currently, I am a Chief Deputy Public Defender in Clark County Las Vegas. My candidacy is more than just a job for me. North Las Vegas is my community, it is the community that raised and molded me into the person I am today. I am BOLD, TOUGH, AND HONEST (#BTH) and dedicated to the people of North Las Vegas. I am proud of being homegrown and I am devoted to maintaining integrity and fairness in North Las Vegas Justice Courts. I am eager to continue my service to the place I love by being the next Justice of the Peace in North Las Vegas Department 3.
  • Justice Court is a court of equity. Everyone will be treated with fairness and respect no matter race, color, creed, social status, or gender identity. North Las Vegas residents will always get a fair bold tough honest shake in Belinda T. Harris courtroom.
  • North Las Vegas is my community. This is the community that raised me. These are the people who I shop with, who I attend church with, who I laugh with, and who I cry with it. I understand their struggles, their dreams, and their need to be treated fairly when they come into the courthouse. Right now people in North Las Vegas do not have confidence in the current system, I can and will restore that confidence in they system due to my personal and professional experience.
  • I would like to build up the community- be more positive instead of extremely punitive. Statistics have shown that when there are positive remedies that people are more successful. For example, there are several agencies that work within the court system to provide classes, what if those classes could link with other community partners to provide services and resources that could help the person.
I am passionate about fairness and integrity in the judiciary.
I look up to my parents, Al and Mattie Harris. They are both hard working individuals who have always kept an open mind. Both of my parents have always supported me in all of my endeavors, despite the fact, they often had learned about the endeavor as it was being tackled. They always kept an open mind and have constantly encouraged me to have a broad perspective.
I believe the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office it to maintain fairness and integrity.
I would like to leave a legacy of being bold, tough, and honest. Bold enough to make decisions based upon merit and not popular opinion. Tough enough to take criticism and make necessary improvements. Honest enough with myself to always be bold and tough. I want to be known as not being afraid, ever, to do what is necessary, what is right.
The first historical event that I remember was the Rodney King Riots of 1992. I was 13 years old. I remember watching it on TV with my parents and seeing My God Brother- Mark Craig on the cover of a magazine after the incident.
My first job was a Midway Attendant at Circus Circus Hotel and Casino. I was responsible for greeting the guest, encouraging the guest to play the game, and operating the game. I had the job full time during the summer and part time during the school year. If I remember correctly, I believe I worked there about nine months.
I would describe my legal philosophy as one of equity. I do not believe in the one size fits all approach. I believe that cases that come before the court should be based on the facts of the particular case.
I admire Thurgood Marshall. He was not afraid to be bold, tough, and honest, even when it was not popular opinion.
I do believe that empathy is an important quality for a judge.
North Las Vegas is the community that raised and molded me into the person I am today. To whom much is given much is excepted and required. This is more than just a job for me. Right now the people of North Las Vegas do not have confidence and trust in the current system. I believe that I can and will restore confidence and trust in the system. The residents of North Las Vegas deserve better. I am running in this particular seat to continue to serve my community at a greater capacity.
I do believe it is beneficial for a judge to have previous experience in government and or politics.
My primary concern about today's legal system in my state is the treatment of litigants and attorneys in a disparate manner based upon perceived affluence and/or social standing. I want to ensure that everyone who steps in my courtroom feels as though he/she received a fair shake and was treated with dignity and respect.
I believe the greatest opportunity for the legal system in my state is to elect individuals to the judiciary who will reflect the community. I also believe this will make the judiciary balanced.
I am currently not interested in serving on a higher court in the future.
I believe that Bar Association ratings can be accurate depending on the rating process.
