Three seats were up for election on the Bellevue Board of Directors. Seats in District 3, 4 and 5 were on the general election ballot on November 5, 2013. Chris Marks ran unopposed and won the District 3 seat, Krischanna Roberson defeated Tracy Trojovsky for the District 4 seat and My-Linh Thai defeated Ed Luera for the District 5 seat.

Bellevue School District is located in the City of Bellevue in King County, Washington. The population of Bellevue was 122,363 according to the 2010 U.S. Census.[1]
Demographics
Bellevue outperformed state averages for higher education achievement, median income and poverty in 2013. The percentage of city residents over 25 years old with undergraduate degrees (60.7%) exceeded the state average (31.4%). The 2010 U.S. Census calculated Bellevue's median income at $84,503, while the state median income was $58,890. Bellevue had a poverty rate of 6.6% in the 2010 U.S. Census while the state rate was 12.5%.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Bellevue Board of Directors consists of five members elected by district to four-year terms. There was a primary election on August 6, 2013 in District 5 while Districts 3 and 4 did not hold primaries as each seat had fewer than three candidates. Seats in Districts 1, 2 and 4 wiere up for election on November 3, 2015.
Elections in Washington require candidates to pay filing fees equal to 1% of a position's annual salary. Board members in Bellevue can be reimbursed up to $4,800 for district activities but do not receive salaries, which eliminates the filing fee. Candidates were required to file nominating petitions by May 17, 2013 to qualify for the November ballot. Each candidate could also submit a photo and statement of 100 words or less by August 23, 2013 for the county's local voter pamphlet.[3]

A primary was held on August 6, 2013 for District 4 of the Bellevue Board of Directors. My-Linh Thai and Ed Luera advanced to the November 5, 2013 general election.[4]

Forums
Candidates Krischanna Roberson, Ed Luera and My-Linh Thai participated in a forum on October 8, 2013 at Newport Hills Elementary. The candidates agreed about the need for proactive efforts against bullying and a smarter approach to facilities planning. Roberson said that the biggest challenge facing the district is connecting families with district services, including English as a Second Language (ESL) programs and accommodations for students with disabilities. Thai stated that communicating the long-term goals of the district to parents was important to community engagement. Luera said that the district should find new methods of engaging students in order to improve academic performance.[5]
Endorsements
On October 3, 2013, the Seattle Times endorsed Krischanna Roberson for District 4 and My-Linh Thai for District 5 in the general election.[6]
Campaign finance
Candidates received a total of $15,869.00 and spent a total of $10,258.64 during the election, according to the Washington Public Disclosure Commission.[7]

What was at stake?
Incumbent Chris Marks sought a third term without opposition in District 3. Tracy Trojovsky and Krischanna Roberson ran for an unexpired two-year term in District 4 left open by the resignation of current member Michael Murphy.[8] The District 5 race to replace outgoing member Paul Mills included newcomers Ed Luera and My-Linh Thai.

Additional elections on the ballot
The Bellevue School District race shared the ballot with additional city and county measures. Bellevue ballots featured races for three seats on the Bellevue City Council. Voters also found the following King County offices on the ballot:[9]

King County voters also cast ballots on renewing an existing levy to fund emergency medical services and a proposition to create a Department of Public Defense. There were two statewide initiatives and five advisory votes on the November 5, 2013 ballot.[10]
