West said in an interview at the time he declared, "We have a history of being inclusive. We have a history of equality. This is the greatness of America, and I believe the Republican Party as a whole offers the most to achieve that than anywhere else. There is a conviction in my heart that a limited government is the key to unlocking everybody’s potential." West also stated, "I think I’m absolutely electable. I’m not running because I want to be the first gay candidate in Oregon. I’m running because where there are problems in your community, I think good men need to stand up and take those problems head on."[1]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on West's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Veterans: We made a promise to those who serve and protect our county to take care of them when they come home. For too long, we have failed to keep that promise. We must work with more business leaders in the private sector to help our veterans find work once their service is complete. These are some of the most skilled people in the world, and we need to be connecting them to jobs where they can utilize the skills they have learned throughout their careers.
  • National Security: For the last seven years, the outlook on national security has gone from vigilant to almost nonexistent, and we have seen the consequences. President Obama has been asleep at the wheel. From the growth of ISIS to the outrageous Iran deal, turmoil in Syria and the reemergence of Russia, not to mention North Korea and China, the threats to us here at home and against our allies have never been greater.
  • 2nd Amendment: The Founders included the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights to protect the citizen of the United States against tyranny of any kind. The topic of the Second Amendment has been largely quiet until recent history, but now the right to keep and bear arms has become a very polarizing and contentious topic.
  • Oregon's Workforce: The Schrader-Obama economy has been killing the ability for small businesses to create jobs. Regulations sent down from Washington make it almost impossible to start or grow a business in the 5th District.
