De Yurre submitted the following statement to Ballotpedia regarding his political philosophy:[1]
“ |
Throughout my life I have always been interested in the problems affecting my community. As a journalist I have tried to bring attention to these issues by informing the public and offering solutions. Since becoming a United States citizen I have thought about how I can best serve my community. I feel a sense of obligation to the people of my district, and I feel that the best way that I can help them is to represent them in the State Legislature. Over the past several years as I was writing in the Miami Herald I began to reach out to the community more and more. I have been able to participate in radio and television programs, and this has allowed a dialog with the local community. I feel that as a Democrat I am able to serve the community by fighting for a strong middle class, and to advocate for policies that will help create an equal playing field for those who are struggling. I come from a political family. My father, Benjamin De Yurre Clayton, was the Secretary to the President of Cuba, Dr. Manuel Urrutia. My uncle, Victor De Yurre was the first Mayor of Havana after the fall of the dictatorship in 1959. My Cousin, Victor De Yurre, was Commissioner of the City of Miami for eight years. My great-grandfather, Benjamin Clayton, was general at US Civil War and Rough Rider with T. Roosevelt. He is buried at Arlington Cemetery. The name De Yurre, my name, has a strong sense of connection to the politics of the people of Miami. I believe that it is time that I take my proposals to the State Capitol. With your help I can build a grassroots campaign that can take the voice of the middle class to Tallahassee. I am running to be your Democratic State Representative for District 103, covering areas of Miramar, Hialeah Gardens, Hialeah, Miami and Doral. [3] |
