An election to recall Mayor Benjamin Stapleton was held in Denver, Colorado, in 1924. Voters retained Stapleton.[1]
Recall supporters
Attorney Phil Hornbein started the recall effort following Stapleton's appointment of William Candlish as chief of police. Stapleton and Candlish were both members of the Ku Klux Klan, which supporters of the recall opposed.[2]
Recall opponents
Regarding the recall effort, Stapleton said, "I have little to say, except that I will work with the Klan and for the Klan in the coming election, heart and soul. And if I am re-elected, I shall give the Klan the kind of administration it wants."[1]
