Two of the seven seats on the Bentonville School District school board were up for general election on September 20, 2016. In Zone 3, challenger Eric White defeated incumbent Grant Lightle and former board member Beth Haney. Joe Quinn was the sole candidate to file in the Zone 7 race. The election was canceled due to lack of opposition, and Quinn was automatically re-elected.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Bentonville School District school board comprises seven members elected by district to staggered, five-year terms. The seats in Zone 3 and Zone 7 were up for general election on September 20, 2016. There was no primary election.[2]
Candidates running for the school board had to be at least 18 years of age and registered to vote. Candidates were required to gather petition signatures from at least 20 voters registered in the school district. This petition of candidacy had to be submitted to the Arkansas Secretary of State by June 12, 2016. School board candidates also had to reside in the school district and could not have a record of felony conviction.[3]

The Bentonville School District is located in Benton County in northwest Arkansas. The county seat is Bentonville. Benton County was home to an estimated 249,672 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.[7] The district was the fifth-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 15,081 students.[8]
Demographics
Benton County outperformed Arkansas as a whole in terms of median household income, higher education, and poverty rate. The median household income in the county was $56,325, compared to $41,264 statewide. Of Benton County residents aged 25 years and older, 29.6 percent had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 20.6 percent for Arkansas as a whole. The county poverty rate was 11.9 percent, compared to 18.9 percent for the entire state.[7]
