An effort in Stratford, Connecticut, to recall Town Councilmember Beth Daponte (D) from her position was launched in May 2016. Mark Scheck submitted a request for recall petitions to Stratford Town Hall on May 13, 2016.[1] Town Attorney Chris Hodgson filed for a declaratory ruling with the Connecticut Superior Court on May 25, 2016, to resolve questions about the recall's legality under the town charter. Hodgson's memo noted that while the Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled recalls illegal under home-rule charters, there was not a controlling case to guide his decision.[2] As of December 2016, this recall effort appeared to be abandoned and Ballotpedia discontinued active coverage. Recall supporters
Scheck organized a recall against Daponte due to concerns about tax increases included in the town budget.[1]
Recall opponents
Daponte suggested that Scheck is a Republican who only wanted her removal from the council due to her political affiliation.[1]

The Stratford Town Charter allows for the recall of elected officials via signatures on town-approved affidavits. Registrar of Voters Rick Marcone told the Connecticut Post that organizers needed approximately 450 valid signatures from town residents to force a special election.[1] These signatures needed to be submitted within 30 days of petition delivery to recall organizers.[3]
