Beth Gesner was a judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. She assumed office on May 5, 1999. She left office on August 31, 2023.

Early life and education

Judge Gesner was born in 1958 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1979 and her J.D. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in May 1983.[1]

Career

Judge Gesner began her career as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge William Bryant of the District of Columbia. From October of 1984 through March of 1987, she worked as a litigation attorney for the firm Hogan & Hartson. She was then appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. In September of 1992, she began working with the Department of Justice on the House of Representatives' Bank Investigation as an Assistant to the Special Counsel to the Attorney General. One year later, she became the Chief of the Southern Division of the United States Attorney’s Office in Greenbelt, Maryland. She then worked as the Acting First Assistant United States Attorney from November of 1996 to May of 1997. After this, she worked in her previoius position as Chief of the Southern Division until her appointment to the U.S. District Court in 1999.[1] Gesner retired and assumed recall status on August 31, 2023.[2]
