The Loudoun County School Board is a nine-member board elected to serve four-year terms. One seat on the board is elected at-large, with the remaining eight seats elected by district. The seats of all nine incumbents were up for election on November 3, 2015.[3]

Algonkian District incumbent Debbie Rose, Broad Run District incumbent Kevin Kuesters and Dulles District incumbent Jeff Morse all faced one challenger each in their re-election bids. Rose and Morse retained their seats, while Kuesters lost to challenger Joy Maloney.

Fellow board member William Fox competed against two challengers, Tom Marshall and Nels Pearsall, in his bid to retain the Leesburg District seat. Marshall won the race, removing Fox from the board.

The race for the at-large seat featured newcomers Beth Huck and Stephan Knobloch, since board member Thomas Reed did not file for re-election. Huck won the open seat. Catoctin District incumbent Jennifer Bergel also did not file, which left her seat open to Eric DeKenipp and Dusty Sparrow Reed. DeKenipp securred that open seat. Incumbents Eric Hornberger, Jill Turgeon and Brenda Sheridan all ran unopposed and won re-election to the Ashburn District, Blue Ridge District and Sterling District seats, respectively.

Huck's campaign website listed the following themes for 2015:

Cultivating Educational Excellence!
As one of the wealthiest counties in America, we should be investing more in the future of our students. We should be leading the charge for educational excellence and setting the example.

  • Improve the Overall Learning Experience for Loudoun County Students:
    • Providing project-based learning environments in our schools to encourage a more dynamic approach to teaching and create a more enjoyable and effective way for our students to learn.
    • Remaining abreast of the ever-changing technology and finding new ways to integrate it into the classroom, both in teacher instruction and with students individually.
    • Moving the focus away from standardized testing, and towards a more comprehensive learning environment with higher level thinking strategies.
  • High School Academies: Continue to support and develop the LCPS Academy program to reach beyond its current offerings. (Potentially extending to middle and elementary schools, as well)
  • Increase opportunities for all students to be challenged to excel and meet their potential
    • Gifted Programs
    • Technical Career/Skills Track NOVA Partnership (e.g. auto mechanic, welding, machinist… etc)
    • Additional resources for students who have difficulty meeting benchmarks.

Reducing Class Size & Overcrowding
We need to use a more common sense approach to school rezoning and placement of future school sites, while keeping other critical factors in mind, such as budget and the “feeder” system. It is important for us to consider what is best for the county as whole and not just one area.

Full Day Kindergarten
Parents want it, teachers want it, and children need it... so let’s make it happen. Logistically, there is a lot involved in moving the LCPS Kindergarten program from half day to full day. I want to help LCPS create a clear path to implementing full day kindergarten for all students. (Potential for an opt out – with limited half day opportunities)

Early Intervention
Support existing programs and implement new programs that offer assistance for “at risk” youth. Evaluate the suspension rates, and what we can do to support students, parents, and teachers to facilitate better outcomes for these students. [5]
