Beth Myers is co-founder of The Shawmut Group, a public affairs and campaign consulting firm based in Boston, Mass. She served as chief of staff to former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney (R) and as campaign manager during Romney's 2008 presidential campaign.

Early career

Beth Myers graduated from Tufts University in 1980 with a B.A. in English. Her first political campaign experience occurred when she worked on the 1980 presidential campaign of former President Ronald Reagan (R). On the Reagan campaign, Myers coordinated rural voter identification programs in Texas under the tutelage of Karl Rove. Myers transitioned to a position with Market Opinion Research, where she coordinated get-out-the-vote campaigns across California, Texas, Massachusetts, Louisiana and Missouri. She later served as deputy campaign manager on the 1986 campaign of former Governor of Texas Bill Clements (R).[1][2][3]

After graduating with a J.D. from Southern Methodist University School of Law, Myers began her legal career as a litigation associate in Dallas, Texas, at Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld LLP. She relocated to Massachusetts and worked as a deputy campaign manager on the 1994 Massachusetts U.S. Senate campaign of former Republican nominee Raymond Shamie. Myers went on to serve as chief of staff to former Massachusetts Treasurer Joe Malone and worked on his 1998 gubernatorial campaign. Following the campaign, Myers left politics in order to stay at home and care for her two young children.[1][2][3]

Romney tenure

Beth Myers returned to politics in 2002 as a staffer on the gubernatorial campaign of former Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney (R). She assisted Romney with debate preparation by standing in for his Democratic opponent, Shannon O'Brien, during debate practice. The following year, Myers accepted a position as Romney's chief of staff. After serving Romney in the governor's office, Myers transitioned to the role of campaign manager during his 2008 presidential bid.[1][2][4]

During Romney's 2012 presidential campaign, Myers served as a senior advisor and, again, assisted the candidate with debate preparation. She was also tasked with heading the search for Romney's vice presidential running mate, Congressman Paul Ryan (R).[2][5]

Political consulting

Myers and Romney

Beth Myers co-founded The Shawmut Group, a public affairs and political consulting firm, with Peter Flaherty and Eric Fehrnstrom following Romney's 2008 campaign. As a member of the firm, Myers worked on the 2010 and 2012 U.S. Senate campaigns of former U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R). She also contributed to the 2014 Rhode Island gubernatorial bid of Mayor Allan Fung (R) of Cranston, R.I. The group also works with Mitt Romney's political action committee, Free and Strong America, which supports conservative candidates.[6][7]

In 2013, Campaigns & Elections magazine named Myers to the Influencers 500—a list of key Democratic and Republican political influencers in each state—for her work in Republican Massachusetts politics. [8]

In 2015, Myers joined the presidential campaign of former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush (R) in an advisory position.[5]
