Bill Burgess is a judge of the Florida 6th Circuit Court. His current term ends on January 7, 2031.

Burgess won re-election for judge of the Florida 6th Circuit Court outright in the general election on November 5, 2024, after the primary and general election were canceled.

Biography

Education

Burgess received his B.A. degree (Political Science) from the University of Massachusetts and his J.D. degree from the Washington College of Law, American University. He later earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Clark University.[1]

Career

Burgess began his career in 1976 with the U.S. Army, where he served until 1995. He then spent over 16 years as an assistant state attorney of the 6th Judicial Circuit prior to his judicial election in 2012.[1]

There are 597 judges on the Florida Circuit Court, each elected via nonpartisan elections. They serve six-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to retain their seat.[2]

The chief judge is selected by peer vote and serves in that capacity for two years.

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[2]

  • a qualified elector;
  • a state resident;
  • admitted to practice law in the state for five years; and
  • under the age of 75 (retirement at 75 is mandatory).

2012

Burgesswas elected on Aug. 14, 2012, defeating Andy Steingold with 62.5 percent of the vote.[3][4]
