Bill Lee was a Liberty Union candidate for governor of Vermont in the 2016 election.[1] He was defeated in the general election.

Biography

Lee is a former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox and Montreal Expos. Active in Major League Baseball from 1969 to 1982, he was known by the monniker "Spaceman."[2][3]

Lee filed to run as a Liberty Union candidate in the 2016 election for governor of Vermont.[1] As a minor party candidate, he did not appear on the August 9 primary ballot. He competed in the November general election against Democratic candidate Sue Minter and Republican candidate Phil Scott.

Phil Scott defeated Sue Minter and Bill Lee in the Vermont governor election.

Lee told TIME that he was approached by the Liberty Union party, which 2016 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders (D) helped launch, and asked to run for the office. "I'm a socialist and a left-winger," Lee said of his decision to agree.

Lee stated that his campaign platforms include adopting the Cuban style of education, free energy, and universal healthcare. He also remarked: "I think everything should be taxed, legalized."[2]
