I am a proud West Virginian focused on people, not politics. My years of collaborative work in public health, industry, lawmaking, and teaching taught me that finding common ground with others is the key to success. I will work across party lines to serve the best interests of everyone in House District 82 and the entire state. I especially value a strong economy (we need good-paying jobs with benefits), reproductive health. education, community prosperity, good health, and public safety.

I will listen.

  • Jobs and Economic Development: Making ends meet in West Virginia is difficult. Food, housing, and clothing are expensive. I will passionately advocate to attract high-quality jobs that provide fair wages and benefits. Moreover, I support the development of our infrastructure to boost recreational tourism. We must promote the beauty of our great outdoors as an inviting option for both residents and visitors alike. This issue transcends economics; it’s a critical aspect of enhancing our quality of life. Engaging with nature contributes to our health and happiness. Our hills, valleys, waterways, and rail trails provide a foundation for attracting tourists and their spending, which in turn encourages more people to choose to live here.
  • Women's Health and Wellness: WV is regressing in terms of women's rights. Our state is one of the most restrictive when it comes to allowing women to make decisions about their own bodies. I firmly advocate for women's right to make choices. These two objectives align to promote women's wellness.

    1. To minimize unplanned pregnancies, women in West Virginia need access to effective birth control options that suit their individual needs. Nearly half of all pregnancies are unplanned..

    2. Expectant mothers deserve exceptional maternity care. Women and their babies emerge healthier when pregnant women receive consistent checkups. Hospitals must be a equipped to provide the necessary care for both mothers and infants.
  • Essential Services: It is crucial that we ensure fair compensation and respect for our teachers, police officers, fire fighters, and other first responders. These community heroes deserve our gratitude and support. We need to provide the necessary resources to enable them to excel in their roles and attract the most talented individuals to these positions. Education plays a vital role in a thriving society, contributing to the health, happiness, and overall quality of life for people of all ages. Likewise, our police officers, fire fighters, and prison guards perform demanding yet essential duties in upholding security and order.
I am passionate about the field of Public Health. Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to enhancing both community and individual well-being. My commitment has been driven by the belief that everyone deserves access to the resources and support necessary to lead a healthy life. I remain committed to championing policies and initiatives that empower individuals and communities to thrive. In recognition of my work in this important area, I was honored in 2004 by US News and World Report as one of the ten best minds in the United States for my advocacy and promotion of health.
My Foundations of Wellness volume (Human Kinetics, 2015) encompasses my political philosophy. This work promotes policies and procedures consistent with societal wellbeing. After a 55-year career in industry, government, education, and public health, I completed this summary of my life experiences to provide guidance for myself and others to move toward personal fulfillment, health, happiness, and life satisfaction. What is good for individuals should be good for the local community, the state, the nation, and planet earth.

This volume focuses on personal life satisfaction, excellent quality of life, societal prosperity through a measured approach. All too often, society promotes policies and practices which undermine personal, state, national, and global function. For example, we focus on materialistic possessions as the primary means to happiness. But much of what people pursue is an illusion promoted by Madison Avenue advertising. Rather, these are surrogates for fulfillment and counterproductive to our life satisfaction, health, and wellness. I elucidate how our goal is inner peace. Economic prosperity is one component of health, wellness and life satisfaction, but by itself, it misses the mark. We do need resources to live well, but Living in harmony with the outdoors, engaging in regular physical activity, eating more plants and less processed foods and high fat meat, appreciating others nonjudgmentally, living our lives in balance with nature, using but not overconsuming material products can help provide us fulfillment, personal health and wellness. Stress, obesity, and addictive behaviors are at pandemic levels West Virginia. We need policies and procedures which nurture individuals, groups, and our environment.

Many of our social, political, and economic policies contribute to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, poor mental health, and global warming. Foundations of Wellness provides an antidote.
As a proud West Virginian, I am deeply committed to prioritizing people over politics. My extensive experience in public health, industry, lawmaking, and education has taught me that the foundation of success lies in finding common ground with others. Having lived in various states and gained insights into their social and political practices, I am prepared to work across party lines to serve the best interests of everyone in District 82 as well as the larger West Virginia community. Key areas that I value include education, community prosperity, public health, and ensuring the safety of our citizens. Throughout my journey, I have learned that listening is crucial to achieving social and political success. I aim to truly understand the voices of those I represent. My time serving in the West Virginia Legislature during the mid-1980s provided me with invaluable real-world experience regarding the inner workings of our governmental system. As a freshman legislator, I was honored to be appointed as the chair of a Finance Sub-Committee, overseeing approximately $350 million of a two-billion-dollar state budget. This role allowed me to collaborate with colleagues across party lines, ensuring that our financial decisions effectively met the needs of our constituents. Over the years, my background has become increasingly diverse. I have lived in various regions of the United States and traveled extensively abroad, gaining a keen understanding of what societal approaches work. For instance, during my travels in 2023, I journeyed approximately 200 miles each in Austria, Germany, and Spain. Through these experiences, I observed different strategies for addressing homelessness, which varied significantly between the countries. In addition to my legislative work, I possess a robust background in health. Serving as a school counselor, I witnessed firsthand the mental health challenges faced by youth and their families.
