An effort in Plummer, Idaho, to recall Mayor Bill Weems was initiated in September 2020. Recall organizers submitted enough signatures to put the recall election on the ballot. The recall election took place on March 9, 2021, and Weems retained his seat.[1][2]

Recall vote

The recall election took place on March 9, 2021. There needed to be at least 78 votes in favor of the recall for Weems to be removed from office.[2]

Recall supporters

Recall petitions listed the following as reasons for a recall election:[1]

  • For his continuous underhanded tactics. For his ignoring concerns that have been brought to his attention by employees, residents, and the City Council.
  • For preferential treatment to his chosen few. Treating those that will not conform to his wishes poorly. For his vulgar behavior in City Council meetings and the treatment of the council.
  • For violations for the Sewer Plant under his watch.
  • Significant erosion of public confidence in city government during Mayor Weems administration.
  • Failure to adequately supervise staff, by failing to do so, allowing decisions to be made at staff level without City Council and public input or review that profoundly impact the, rights and quality of life of Plummer Idaho residents.
  • Allowing unresolved conflicts of interest by employees to impact the work that needed to be done in the City.

A recall election for a city official requires valid signatures equal to at least 20 percent of the number of electors registered to vote at the last general city election held in the city for the election of officers. Circulation of the recall petition must be completed within 75 days after the form of the recall petition is approved for circulation.

Recall organizers filed for petitions on September 1, 2020. Petitioners were required to submit 94 valid signatures by November 16, 2020, to put the recall election on the ballot. There were 108 signatures turned in, with 103 signatures being found valid.[1]
