Bill to expand size of high court dies in Arizona
February 16, 2011
Arizona: This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee struck down proposed legislation to add two justices to the Arizona Supreme Court. The state is one of eighteen with only five members on its high court. According to the Chief Justice Rebecca White Berch, having only five members saves the judicial branch around $1 million each year. The Chief Justice was not in favor of expanding the court, noting that is, "one of the entities of government that's actually current in our caseload."[1] The bill was not even debated in the committee.
