Burkette was arrested on July 20, 2018, for impersonating a police officer. He was at the secretary of state's office filing to run for election. As he was led out of the building, he said, "They say I'm not chief of police for the Louisiana Band of Choctaw Indians. I am."[1]
Burkette was a 2016 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 5th Congressional District of Louisiana.[2]
