Billy Wayne Engle Jr. was a 2016 Republican write-in candidate for the 3rd Congressional District. He was also a write-in candidate Governor of Texas in 2018.[1][2]

Engel previously ran for the 25th Congressional District of Texas and the 20th Legislative District of Texas.[1][3]

Engle is a former Democrat and Independent. He ran for state representative and U.S. Representative in both 2010 and 2012 as a Paper Ballot Write In candidate. Engle has said, "I will never take money from Lobbyists, Big Corporations and Rich people because I work for the American People no one also."[4]

Engle is President of the National Association of Responsible Gun Owners and Chairman of the Republicans for Responsible Leadership.[2]

Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Sam Johnson (R) defeated Adam Bell (D), Scott Jameson (L), Paul Blair (G), and write-in candidate Billy Wayne Engle Jr. in the general election on November 8, 2016. Johnson defeated Dave Cornette, John Slavens, and Keith Thurgood in the Republican primary on March 1, 2016, while Adam Bell defeated Michael Filak to win the Democratic nomination.[5][6]

Engle had considered a run for Texas Attorney General but decided not to run after Sam Houston declared he would be entering the race.[3] He then considered a run for Texas Railroad Commission, but withdrew from the race after Steve Brown declared his candidacy.[7]

Issues

In an email to Ballotpedia, Engle outlined his main issues in the race for Railroad Commissioner:[4][8]

  1. "I will do everything in my power to oversee and regulate the oil and gas industry responsibly."
  2. "I will make sure are gas utilities, pipeline, liquefied petroleum, surface coal and uranium mining are produced safely and responsibly."
  3. "I will do everything I can to make sure Texans don't have to pay more than they have too and I will work on cutting the red tap and regulations."
