Birth certificate costs vary from state to state and, sometimes, among localities within a state. A birth certificate is a vital record that documents the birth of an individual. Vital records, such as birth certificates, are issued by government authorities. A birth certificate is required for a variety of purposes, including obtaining a driver's license or state-issued identification card, enrolling in school, and establishing Social Security and Medicare or Medicaid eligibility.[1]
