Two of the seven seats on the Blue Springs School District Board of Education were up for general election on April 5, 2016. Incumbents Rhonda Gilstrap and Dave Wright were the only two candidates to file in the race. Due to this lack of opposition, the election was canceled and the race did not appear on the ballot.[1] Gilstrap and Wright were both automatically re-elected.

Voter and candidate information
The Blue Springs Board of Education consists of seven members elected at-large to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on April 5, 2016. Two seats were up for election in 2016.[2]
An individual must be a registered voter in order to vote in a school election. In order to vote, a person must be 18 years of age or older, must be a citizen of the United States, and must reside in the school district for 30 days. School board candidates must be at least 24 years of age, have lived in the state for one year, and cannot be a convicted felon.[2]
School board candidates had to file with their county elections department during the candidate filing period, which began on December 15, 2015, and ended on January 19, 2016. To vote in the 2016 general election, residents had to register by March 9, 2016. The absentee voting deadline was on April 4, 2016.[3]

Blue Springs School District is located in northwest Missouri in Jackson County. The county seats of Jackson County are Independence and Kansas City. Jackson County was home to 683,191 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] Blue Springs School District is located in Missouri. The district was the 14th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 14,382 students.[7]
Demographics
Jackson County outperformed the rest of Missouri in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 27.6 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.2 percent of state residents. The median household income in Jackson County was $47,015, compared to $47,380 for the state of Missouri. The poverty rate in the county was 17.4 percent, compared to 15.5 percent for the entire state.[6]
