Petitions to recall Trustees Christine Beecher and Bryce Hammond were not approved for circulation in Rives Township, Michigan, during a June 8, 2023, hearing. Treasurer Janina Teske resigned after a petition to recall her was approved for circulation.[1][2][3]

Recall supporters

Multiple recall petitions were filed. Some of the petitions gave Beecher and Hammond's votes relating to the approval of a new clerk after Township Clerk Judi McCord resigned on April 4, 2023, as the reason for the recall.[1][4]

Two recall petitions were filed against Teske, giving misappropriation of funds and a conflict of interest as the reasons for the recall.[1]

Recall opponents

In a comment to WLNS, Beecher said, “You can’t be penalized for how you vote. I mean if you make a vote that is in your opinion best for the community, then it shouldn’t matter one way or another.” Teske could not be reached for comment by WLNS.[1]

Michigan requires a clarity and factual hearing in order to approve a recall petition for circulation. When a petition is approved for circulation, organizers need to collect signatures equal to 25% of the number of township voters from the preceding gubernatorial election in order to trigger a recall election.

On June 8, 2023, the Jackson County Election Commission rejected the language of the petitions to recall Beecher and Hammond. Organizers have the option to appeal the decision. The petition to recall Teske which gave a conflict of interest as the reason for the recall was approved for circulation. It will not be circulated because Teske resigned.[2][3]
